Ship A’hoy! – I’m Jarle Karlsrud, but most of my international friends and clients know me simply as “Charlie”.
Born and raised along the Norwegian coast, I’ve been around boats my whole life – from traditional wooden classics to modern(ish) motorsailers. At age 30, I took on what many would call a crazy adventure: a shorthanded voyage from Norway to the Caribbean and back on a modest 32-foot sailboat – with my wife and our small child aboard. Two Atlantic crossings, one unforgettable year, and two books later (Verden er liten når vinden er god! and Det er forbudt å falle over bord!), that journey shaped who I am today.
After returning home, I spent over a decade building and running my own company in the marine air-treatment sector (specializing in dehumidifiers for boats – because a dry boat is a happy boat). I worked closely with virtually every major Norwegian marine retailer (Seatronic, Maritim, BestMarin, and many more), gaining deep insight into the industry from the inside.
At 53, I sold the business to do what I love most: spend more time on the water. Today I sail my 1982 Nauticat 38 motorsailer, Maja – a sturdy, comfortable bluewater home that has taught me as much about patience and maintenance as it has about freedom. You’ll find me sharing real-life stories, refit projects, long passages, and the occasional humorous mishap on my YouTube channel Sailing Maja (4,000 subscribers and growing).
